Flooded and Fluent
I made it out of the workweek and the biblical rainfall:
My Portuguese is finally getting better. As someone with ADHD, I can’t even tell you how difficult it has been and how long it’s taken me. I swear there was a period where I was getting worse despite 3 classes per week. And then one day, out of nowhere, in the middle of a flood, you find yourself answering all the questions at the farmácia and even holding a full conversation. The attendant looks so proud, like, "Finally, this gringo got his shit together and moved past DuoLingo." And in that moment, you’re thinking, Wait, I’m doing it! Who am I? It’s this little win that you have all to yourself.
I love learning through films, and this week I’ve watched Minha Mãe é Uma Peça three times. Paulo Gustavo, who created and stars as Dona Hermínia, based the character on his own mother. Tragically, he passed away in May 2021, but this film remains a beautiful, hilarious love letter to her. Fucking legend.
